Hand-Me-Down Pajamas: What to Check Before Passing Them On
That favorite pajama print is suddenly too short at the ankles. Before you tuck it into a bin for a younger sibling or pass it to a friend, give it a quick once-over. A familiar pair still needs to be right for the next child.
This hand-me-down pajama checklist helps you sort what to pass along, what needs a closer look and what should stay out of the bedtime drawer.

1. Keep the information with the pajamas
Start with the brand, size and care instructions, whether they are on a sewn-in label or printed inside the garment. Keep any product or style information you have, too. A photo of the readable markings is useful when you are sorting several sizes at once.
Check the brand and product against the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall database before passing it on. If you find a match, follow that recall's instructions rather than donating it. If essential identification or care information has worn away, ask the manufacturer before guessing.
2. Look past the cute print
Lay the pajamas flat in good light and check both the outside and inside. This is easier before the pair disappears into a storage bag.
- Fabric and seams: Look for holes, thinning areas, opened seams and loose threads.
- Fasteners: Check that zippers work smoothly and that snaps, buttons and any decorations are secure. The CPSC specifically flags easily detached clothing parts as a choking concern in its secondhand-product guidance.
- Waistbands and cuffs: Notice stretched-out elastic or cuffs that no longer hold their shape.
- Both pieces: For a set, check the top and pants separately. One may have had more wear than the other.
Set aside anything with damage or a loose component rather than passing it along as ready-to-wear sleepwear. If you are unsure whether a problem can be safely repaired, check with the manufacturer. A sentimental pair can remain a keepsake without going back into bedtime rotation.
3. Check the fit on the next child
The size on the label is a starting point, not a promise that a previously worn pair will fit another child. Try it on before adding it to the bedtime drawer, following the garment's fit and safety instructions.
If the sleepwear is labeled to fit snugly, it should still fit snugly. Do not choose a loose, oversized pair simply to leave room to grow. The CPSC's children's sleepwear guidance explains why the distinction between flame-resistant and tight-fitting sleepwear matters. For more everyday sizing checks, see our kids' pajama fit guide.

4. Wash according to the garment's instructions
Different brands and fabrics can have different care needs, so keep each pair's instructions in view. For Bellabu Bear items, our current care guidance recommends washing inside out in cold water, then tumble drying on low or hanging to dry. Wash separately from rough items such as jeans, towels and zippered items.
Let everything dry completely before packing it away. If you need the fuller laundry routine, our bamboo pajama washing guide keeps those steps together.
5. Make the handoff easy
Fold matching tops and bottoms together and put the labeled size on the outside of the bag or bin. Keep the original garment markings intact. Store clean, dry pajamas in a clean, dry place, and include any care information the next family will need.
A simple note is enough: brand, labeled size, care instructions and anything the recipient should check. Ask them to check the condition and fit again when their child is ready to wear the pair, especially if it has been stored for a while.
The quick keep-or-pass checklist
- Brand and care information are readable or verified.
- No applicable recall was found.
- Fabric, seams, cuffs and fasteners are in good condition.
- The pair fits the next child as its instructions require.
- It is clean, completely dry and packed with its matching piece.
You do not need to save every pair. Passing along a smaller, thoughtfully checked bundle is more helpful than a big bag that leaves another parent with all the sorting.
